SHUTAK, Marilyn Lewis, 76, of Toronto, OH, died of major stroke complications on Oct. 2, 2013, at 7:27 p.m. at The Laurels in Steubenville, Ohio.
She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Dec. 9, 1936, the daughter of the late Edward and Elsie (Wharff) Lewis.
Also, preceding her in death was her brother, Edward F. Lewis.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Shutak of Toronto, OH, whom she married August 24, 1988 and son, Kenneth Lewis O'Hara of Upper Arlington, OH. Other survivors include a sister, Helen Lewis Barshay of Baltimore, MD, and sister-in-law, Rosemary Lewis of Austintown, OH.
She was employed by the Wellsville, OH, school system for many years, having served as dean of girls, guidance counselor and science teacher.
She was designated as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar. Marilyn enjoyed cooking, tatting, and Bible study. She was noted for her work ethics and ability to help others.
Marilyn was a 1955 graduate of Collinwood High School, Cleveland, Ohio. She went on to Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, and earned a bachelor's degree in biology, graduating magna cum laude. Additionally, she earned induction into the Phi Beta Kappa Society. She then went on to Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, obtaining a M.A. in guidance counseling.
Marilyn was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Toronto, Ohio. She was a member and past president of the Helen Gould Literary Club and the Travelers Club of East Liverpool, Ohio.
As per her request there will be no visitation and internment will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 116 N. Third Street, Toronto, OH 43964.
The family would like to thank her many friends for the cards, visits, flowers and support during her illness. The family would also like to thank the staff at The Laurels and Charity Hospice for their excellent care and support.
