Record numbers for event
STEUBENVILLE - Runners clad in brightly colored skirts, pig-tails, chicken hats, and tuxedo shirts flocked to Assisi Heights early Saturday morning to compete in the sixth-annual Kelly Roggensack Memorial Run.
Every year, the Franciscan cross country teams host the event to honor the memory of Kelly Roggensack and as a fundraiser for their season. The brightly colored clothes and crazy hairstyles are a tribute to Kelly's personality and philosophy: be loud, be crazy, because life's too short to take yourself too seriously.
For the second year in a row, the race featured a 5K run, 3K walk, and 1K kid's fun run. This year, however, the Kelly run featured a new start and finish as well as a new course that stayed on campus roads instead of going off-road.
"The new course was a success," event coordinator Don Bennette said. "People seemed to like it and for the first time we had a water cooler at the mile marker."
This year, there were over 150 pre-registries and over 50 walk-up registrations, the largest in the history of the race. Participants included students, alumni, parents and local runners.
This years winner was 22 year-old Adam Estavillo who won with a time of 18:42.0. FUS student, Jane Crosby was the top female finish with a time of 21:37.0.
"Kelly was all about living her life to go out and change the world." Bennette said. "She had such a positive influence on the team."
