Lights and the sounds of Christmas will be greeting many visiting Follansbee Municipal Park this weekend as the annual Christmas in the Park event returns.
The year festival will take place Saturday and Sunday and include Christmas lights hanging from the trees and shelters, music drifting through the air and a variety of vendors, games and activities.
While it's a time to begin thinking about Christmas, and possibly even pick up a few early gifts, the event, much like Christmas itself, is a time of giving.
In addition to helping to spread some Christmas cheer, the festival also serves as a fundraiser for two local organizations and as a way to help a local child with special medical needs.
Organizers divide the proceeds among the local food pantry provided by the Follansbee R.E.A.C.H. program and to the Anderson Children's Home, which provides a home to several children and adults with mental and physical impairments.
A different child in need is selected each year.
Last year, Christmas in the Park raised more than $2,000, and we're sure they will meet and even exceed that amount this year with the help of our residents.
We encourage everyone to check out this great event Saturday and Sunday, have some fun, get in the holiday spirit and, most importantly, contribute toward the effort to help others.
