NEW CUMBERLAND - New Cumberland residents will be able to get rid of unwanted items during the fall cleanup from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
The cleanup will be held at the New Cumberland Municipal Garage on Sedgwick Street. There will be two dumpsters for garbage and one for scrap metal.
Organizers hope to sell the scrap metal and use the proceeds to pay for the dumpster rentals, said Councilwoman Miriam Hess, who is helping coordinate the event.
"We're just trying to provide another opportunity (other than the spring cleanup) because this time of year, people have a lot of stuff that they need to get rid of," Hess said.
Tires and TVs will not be accepted, she said. Items such as old paint or motor oil should be taken to the Hancock County Solid Waste Authority's Recycle and Convenience Center, 832 Gas Valley Road, she said.
"We don't want to just fill up the landfill with stuff that shouldn't be there," Hess said.
Residents who participate in the cleanup should follow the directions of the attendant at the Municipal Garage, she said.
Organizers hope to have a spring cleanup in which tires are accepted.
