Awareness year-round

October 29, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

Although October is just about history, advocates to raise awareness about breast cancer through early detection through self-examinations and mammograms hope to promote the message on a year-round basis.

Granted, this month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which prompts a shower of pink reminders, including during the 17th-annual Ohio Mammography Day Wreath Ceremony held earlier this month at the Fort Steuben Mall.

These photos are testimony to that event, which was organized by the Women In Action Against Cancer Coalition of Jefferson County.

The ceremony celebrated survivorship and included music; informational booths; proclamations; door prizes; a survivor's story by Marcia Dreyer, who presented pink roses to other survivors, including Jean Frio of Follansbee, a survivor of 27 years; and a pledge "to openly discuss with the women in my life young and old this month and always the importance of women's health. I vow to honor survivors and use this key to remind me that I can create new survivors. Early detection is the key, and I can be the key to helping others."

If you're not familiar with WIAACC, it helps women take charge of their health and get the help they need.

It meets the first Wednesday of the month at noon at Manfred's on Sunset Boulevard. It has 49-plus members and is open to anyone.
