STEUBENVILLE - Steubenville City Council and the community may learn Thursday if the search for a new city manager is successful.

Third Ward Councilman Greg Metcalf said Tuesday night the council is still negotiating with a candidate who was offered the city manager job 10 days ago.

The candidate was one of three people who met with the council members and the citizens committee on Nov. 9.

The council offered the manager's job to the man that afternoon who told city officials he needed several days to consider the job.

Metcalf indicated the contract negotiations started this week, "and we hope to hear something by Thursday."

"If the candidate says no to our offer we will start addressing that issue at that time," Metcalf told reporters following the Tuesday night city council meeting.

The council met in executive session for nearly an hour Tuesday night to discuss the latest developments in the search for a new city manager.

This is the second attempt by the city council to fill the city manager position after former City Manager Cathy Davison resigned in May.

The first round of the search process failed to hire a manager after the final candidate turned down the Steubenville city manager job for a city manager position in Grand Junction, Kan.

A second finalist told the city council he was dropping out of the running for the job to accept a city manager job in Portsmouth, Ohio.

The second round search process saw 34 people apply for the job.

According to the city charter, "Once the applicant is chosen, the said applicant must be on the job within 30 days from the date he or she is hired."

Under the terms of the charter Steubenville Mayor Domenick Mucci will continue serving as acting city manager until someone is hired for the position.
