Auxiliary sends holiday cheer

WEIRTON - The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary held the monthly meeting Dec. 9 at the Serbian American Cultural Center on Colliers Way.

President Joan Spano called the meeting to order and presided over the business session.

Marcy Spano led devotions and held special prayer for George Tremblay, Maxine Ragan, John White, Clyde Elliott, Carol and Danny Lyons, Josi Elliott, Gertie Hanlin, Joan Spano, Maria Tasey, Jean Hanlin and Scott Dawson.

Elizabeth Shipe led the Pledge of Allegiance and Darlene Kemp called roll. Secretary Carol Lyons read the November meeting minutes, which were approved as read.

Lyons read a thank-you letter from Boatsie's Boxes for 26 stockings and 540 Christmas cards sent to active-duty military members. The group received a thank-you letter from Barboursville Veterans Home for 88 Christmas cards sent to the residents at the home.

In Treasurer Maxine Ragan's absence, Marcy Spano gave her report. In Sunshine Chair Mary Ann Elliott's absence, Shirley Brecht gave her report. The group sent get-well cards to Pam Stiles, Dora Ferrelli and Carol Lyons. Sympathy cards were sent to Darrell and Gloria Thompson and the Leonard Ellis family.

Toys for Tots Chair Darlene Kemp gave a short report and said signing up families in need has been slow. Christmas Chair Shirley Brecht rescheduled the Christmas Party 6 p.m. Dec. 17 at Undo's, weather permitting.

December birthday wishes were extended to Joan Spano, Peg Dawson and Darlene Kemp, and the group sang "Happy Birthday."

Elizabeth Shipe won the 50/50 and donated it back to the club.

Joan Spano sent a total of 540 Christmas cards to veterans, including Tri-State Marine Corps Club, Barboursville Veterans Home, Wyngate, Weirton Geriatric Center, Serra Manor, Heritage Place, Paris Presbyterian Church, Beckley Veterans Home and Barboursville Veterans Home.

Joan Spano also made Lance Cpl. Wendy Wells a Christmas stocking. Wells is the daughter of Marianne Cunningham and will return home in December.

Members who participated in making the cards and stocking for Boatsie's Boxes included Mary Ann Elliott, Shirley Brecht, Barbara Spinella, Maxine Ragan, Tina Spano, LaVonne Balint, Marcy Spano, Joan Spano, Judy Hucik, Barbara Mermon, Mary Ann Smith, Leroy Bee, Marianne Cunningham and Peg Dawson.

Following the meeting, the auxiliary joined the Marines Corps Club for their Christmas party, where Joan Spano passed out flash lights.

The 2014 officers include President Joan Spano, First Vice President Darlene Kemp, Second Vice President Maxine Ragan, Secretary Carol Lyons, Treasurer Shirley Brecht, Sunshine Chair Mary Ann Elliott, Chaplain Mary Ann Smith, Historian Marcy Spano and Sergeant-at-Arms Leroy Bee.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 13.
