After graduating from Washington Irving High School in 1939, Harry went to work at Weirton Steel where he was a machinist for 37 years before retiring in 1978. He proudly served his country during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 10 in Weirton, WV. He was formerly a member of the Fairview Presbyterian Church in New Manchester, WV.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty J. Smith at home. During their high school courtship and 72 years of marriage they spent many hours together building and maintaining their homes, gardening and preserving their food, and traveling to interesting places by land and by sea and by air. They spent most of their life in West Virginia. After Harry retired they spent their winters in sunny Florida and their summers in the Allegheny Mountains in Tionesta, PA, until 2000. In 2010 they moved back to West Virginia to be closer to their son and once again were able to spend their winters in the warm sunshine of Florida.

In addition to their son, George E. Smith and his wife Gladys of St. James City, FL and Chester, WV, they are survived by a granddaughter, Tanya Headley and her husband Eric; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Aaron Headley of Mentor, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will be present to receive friends and family on Tuesday, December 17 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester, WV.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. with Harry's nephew Richard Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell, WV.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to your local Salvation Army or to the Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral, FL.
