FUS men drop heartbreaker

STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's basketball dropped an 87-81 decision in overtime to Hilbert College Saturday.

FUS junior Moses Sullivan hit one-of-two free throws to tie it at 68-all with nine seconds left in regulation.

"Moses had a great game, with his toughness and how he bounced back from such an injury," head coach John Lamana said. "He is a tough kid and he fought tonight, that's for sure. We all just fought, fought, fought. We just need to get ourselves to where we can play a full 40 minutes."

Trailing 41-26 at intermission, the Barons was down 52-42 with 13 minutes remaining.

Sullivan brought in 23 points while Garrison Holmes scored 15. Sophomore Timmy Schenk contributed 12 and sophomore Daniel Kleinschnitz and freshman Christian Duke each scored eight.

"Once overtime hit, I think that was when we really felt the loss of the one big (Joe Rine, due to fouls) we had," Lamana said. "We had a chance in overtime to still go up, and we missed the shot. We need to understand that there is a sense of urgency all the time."

FUS hosts D'Youville College at 1 p.m. today.

Lady Barons win

STEUBNENVILLE - The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's basketball team won its first game of the season Saturdaty, 84-72, over visiting Hilbert College.

"We just kept pushing hard the whole game," head coach Suzy Delaney said. "I'm really proud of the girls for playing tough throughout the 40 minutes and not giving up, especially on the defense."

"I felt like our defense lifted us. It was more aggressive than it's been and that's evident by the steals because getting those steals created some offense and we took that momentum and finished the game strong."

Freshman Iliana Gonzales led the team with eight steals and 23 points. Point guard Cassandra Gomez gave the team an all around solid game with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Captain Lacey Huck earned another double double with 23 points, 12 rebounds and four steals.

The Lady Barons entertain D'Youville College at 3 p.m. today.
