Helen Mundis

MUNDIS, Helen Diane, of Steubenville, passed away on December 21, 2013, after a brief illness.

She was born on March 28, 1928, to Constantine and Eugenia Mundis in Weirton, WV.

She graduated from Follansbee High School and attended Marshall University where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She graduated from West Liberty with a degree in education and obtained her Masters in Education from West Virginia University. She taught in the Steubenville City Schools for over 40 years as well as at Franciscan University.

Helen was very active in her community. She had been involved in the American Heart Association: YMCA, Delta Kappa Gamma, Jefferson County Humane Society, S&J Credit Union, past officer of the Steubenville Education Association, Daughters of Penelope, Jefferson County Retired Teaches Association, Steubenville City Schools Retirees Group, and Winner of the Martha Holden Jennings Scholarship Award. She also belonged to several bridge and card clubs.

She loved spending time with her family and many close friends. She traveled a great deal with her friends and often took her nieces with her. Helen treasured the great companionship of her dog Heidi.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Katherine Mundis Sowards, sister and brother-in-law, Irene and John Batlas, niece, Jan-marie Amanda Batlas, and great-nephew, John Barnhart.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Buckley D. Sowards of Waite Hill, OH and Palm Beach, FL; niece, Eugenie Carolyn (Genie) and nephew-in-law, Kerry; great-nieces Elizabeth Amanda and Zoe Irene Barnhart of Morgantown, WV and niece Katherine Diane (Tiger) Batlas of Pittsburgh.

Friends will be received Monday, December 23, at 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 300 S. 4th St., Steubenville, OH, Fr. Nicholas Halkias will officiate.

Donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 300 S. 4th St., Steubenville, OH 43952.
