From staff reports , Weirton Daily Times

WEIRTON - A new race event is being planned to benefit those with, and raise awareness of, spinal cord injuries.

The inaugural "Stand Up for a Cause...Because You Can" 5K will be held Jan. 4, with a route winding through portions of Weirton Heights.

The cost to run in the 5K is $20. Those interested in participating can sign up online at or sign up the day of the race at Quick Fit. Every participant will receive a T-shirt on race day.

Beginning at 9 a.m. at Starvaggi Memorial Park, the race will benefit Josh Boyd, an area resident who was paralyzed in a Motocross accident earlier this year.

The race course will start at the park, making its way up Starvaggi Drive, turning right onto Pennsylvania Avenue and then onto Forest Road, Greenlawn Boulevard and Scenic Drive before making its way back to Starvaggi Park for the finish.

Post-race activities, including door prizes, refreshments, medals and an ugly sweater contest will be held at Quick Fit Gym.

A pre-race reception will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 3 at Hibbett Sports in the Kmart shopping plaza on Three Springs Drive.

All post-race activities including door prizes, refreshments, medals and ugly sweater contest will take place at Quick Fit Gym on Pennsylvania Avenue.
