Red Knights stop Irish

BELLAIRE - Makayla Bauman hauled in a game-high 17 rebounds and had four steals as the Toronto girls basketball team defeated host St. John Central, 59-51, Wednesday evening.

Katie Spadafora added 12 caroms. Malaysia Harrison collected five steals and Lindsay Bodnar four.

The Red Knights host Bishop Donahue on Monday.

Lexie Berger netted eight of her team-high 15 points in the first period and Bodnar scored half of her team's total in the second quarter.

Bauman totaled six points and Spadafora five in fourth period as Toronto pulled away at the end.

Bodnar and Bauman each added 14 points for the winners.

Lindsey Froelich netted a game-high 20 points for the Irish, eight coming in the fourth period. Marissa Rose chipped in with 15 points before fouling out.

FUS men lose close one

ALTOONA, Pa.- The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's basketball team dropped an 83-79 decision at Penn State-Altoona Wednesday.

The Barons grabbed a 77-67 lead with four minutes left in the contest, but were outscored 14-2 down the stretch,

"We didn't take care of the basketball, which put too much pressure on our defense." FUS head coach John Lamanna said. "When we turned the ball over, it provided easy baskets for Altoona. During that crunch time of the game, it's a priority that we take care of the basketball and don't leave empty stretches out on the floor."

Justin Horstman led the Barons with 13 points.

"Everybody contributed and everybody made a play to help us be successful. It was a group effort," Lamanna said. "We competed hard. We just came up short."

FUS, 1-3 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action and 2-7 overall, visits Penn State-Behrend at 2 p.m. Saturday.

FUS women lose on road

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's basketball team dropped a 67-60 count at Penn State-Altoona Wednesday.

"I'm happy we had those looks and am confident we will cash those in in the future," head coach Suzy Delaney said. " We did attack on offense better in the second half."

The Lady Barons closed the gap to three points twice in the second half, including once in the final two minutes.

"We brought ourselves back into it and the girls kept up the pressure," Delaney said.

Lacey Huck drained a triple to bring FUS within four with 30 seconds left in the game, but the Lions made their free throws down the stretch to gain the win.

"We have to learn from each loss and move on," Delaney said. "We're going to keep working together and stay focused on team chemistry."

Dani Link had 15 points and four rebounds. Illiana Gonzalez finished with 19 points and Huck totaled 16 points and nine rebounds.

FUS visits Penn State Behrend at 4 p.m. Saturday and Pitt-Bradford on Sunday.
