WEIRTON - With only one major fundraiser remaining, the Weirton United Way stands at 84 percent of its $260,000 goal for the 2013 campaign.

During its third report luncheon, held Friday at the Serbian American Cultural Center, United Way officials announced the campaign has brought in $219,116.10 for the campaign.

Guest speaker Friday was Bill D'Alesio, who recently retired as president of the Weirton branch of United Bank and is a member of the United Way's board of directors, discussed some of his experiences with the organization and noted some of the potential impact it has on the community through its member agencies.

"The need in unbelievable here," D'Alesio said.

Relaying a recent conversation, he said he had learned of the Weirton Christian Center's services to almost 160 local youths every day. Other agency representatives in attendance noted the number of people they serve, with 110 youths participating in programs from the Boys and Girls Club of Weirton; 12 at the Dunbar Center; thousands served by C.H.A.N.G.E., Inc.; 92 clients at the Hancock County Sheltered Workshop; 150 youth with Hancock County 4H; and the Salvation Army assisting hundreds of families each month.

Noting the next campaign fundraiser event was coming up, D'Alesio challenged those in attendance Friday to invite at least two people to the event. The Pre-Super Bowl Tailgate Party will be held 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Serbian American Cultural Center.

United Way Executive Board President John Frankovitch encouraged people to think about those the member agencies assist when donating to the campaign, saying while some experienced difficulties in recent weeks because of weather, those served have those hardships and more throughout the year.

"This is a 12-month season for them," Frankovitch said.
