Creek defeats Buckeye Local

Weirton Daily Times

WINTERSVILLE - Indian Creek increased its intensity and defensive pressure to stymie Buckeye Local's offense.

The Panthers scored 15 points in the first eight minutes of the game, but the Redskins limited the Panthers to just 15 more points during the next 21:08 of game action. In the end, the Indian Creek boys' basketball team did what it had to do on both ends of the floor en route to a 53-41 over Buckeye Local Friday night at home.

"We played with more intensity," Indian Creek (5-8) head coach Joe Dunlevy said about his team's defensive turnaround. "When you play man-to-man, you learn as they game goes on. Hopefully, you learn what they are trying to do. We played a lot harder.

"They started strong. They came out with a lot of intensity. We didn't match their intensity early. You have to give them credit."

The Panthers got off to a fast start, but couldn't maintain it.

"Coming up here, this is a very-hostile environment," Buckeye Local (4-7) head coach Greg Haberfield said. "They are well coached, especially defensively.

Brennan Czuchran netted a game-high 17 points, while Jonathan Borkoski contributed 10 points for the Panthers.

Buckeye Local scored the first six points of the game, and later a 3-pointer by Borkoski gave the Panthers an 11-5 advantage. Dokes scored on to beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter to give the visitors a 15-10 lead.

"We were excited," Haberfield said. "We got off to a fast start. We followed our game plan. We were playing hard. Their pressure was irrelevant.

"Then, their pressure started to work on us. It took us out of our game plan."

The Redskins scored the first seven points of the second stanza to take a 17-15 lead. A basket by Devan Pyciak tied it, but then the hosts once again tallied the next seven points. Pyciak's second basket of the quarter pulled the Panthers to within 24-19 at halftime.

"We executed at times offensively, and we didn't at other times," Dunlevy said. "Sometimes, you have to give the other team credit. They came ready to play."

In the fourth quarter, a basket by Borkoski pulled Buckeye Local to within 40-30 with 4:27 left in the game, but he was unable to complete the three-point play. The Redskins responded with another 7-0 spurt to build their advantage to 47-30.

Czuchran connected on his second 3-pointer of the game with 2:52 showing on the clock, but the Redskins recorded four straight points to lead 51-33 with 1:15 left to play.

Indian Creek is scheduled to play again this afternoon at home against Brooke. The JV game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The game against the Bruins is the Redskins fourth of the week.

"We played them earlier in the year," Dunlevy said. "They are talented. They are big, they are fast and they are talented."

Buckeye Local is scheduled to play again Tuesday at home against Martins Ferry. The Panthers are hoping for a better result against the Purple Riders this time around.

"Yeah, they beat us by 39 points the first time we played them," Haberfield said.
