WEIRTON - A new group of future community leaders began their journey Friday and Saturday with the kickoff of the 2014 class of Leadership Weirton.

The annual program, organized by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce, began with a dinner and meet-and-greet session Friday at the Holiday Inn before taking part in their first session Saturday at West Virginia Northern Community College.

Chamber President Brenda Mull welcomed the participants and their sponsors, noting this is the 22nd year for the program in Weirton and wishing them well as they set off on the experience.

"People seem to have different opinions about what leadership really is," Mull said, adding, for her, leadership can be seen in people with a mixture of courage, compassion, integrity, vision and a sense of humor.

She encouraged them to take the time to form friendships, work together and learn from each other and to have fun.

"Be involved. I guarantee you will get a lot out of it," she said. "Life can offer you so much more if you're not afraid to step out of the box."
