February 3, 2014
Weirton Daily Times

WEIRTON - Mount Olive Baptist Church will hold a Black History essay contest for the children of the church's youth choir at 1 p.m. Feb. 23 at the church located at Weir Avenue and Kessel Street.

The children will select one of three topics to write an essay on: the Tuskegee Airmen's significance in American history; Rosa Parks' importance to the Civil Rights Movement; or why it is important to educate children regardless of race, color, creed or religion.

A panel of judges will select the three winning essays. The judges include Helen Thompson of Mingo Junction, Ohio, Rick Montgomery of Pittsburgh and Clemmie Payton Frierson of Weirton.

Following the morning worship service, the congregation and choir will have a "soul food" dinner. Ambrose Bolling of Weirton, a former Tuskegee Airman, will be the speaker.

Each essay contest participant will receive a certificate of participation and cash prizes will be given to the first-, second- and third-place winners.

Frierson is the contest coordinator. Rosie McAllister is the choir director and will coordinate the dinner with the assistance of the church's Culinary Department.
