Ellzy reaches milestone in HC win

DOVER - It was a milestone night Monday for Katie Ellzy as she reached the 1,000-point mark and led Harrison Central to a girls Division III sectional tournament game to a 64-52 win over Monroe Central.

The 21st of her game-high 24 points came late in the third quarter and would bring the Huskies faithful to their feet as they cheered for the much-relieved junior.

Earlier in the third frame, after missing a jumper, Ellzy was whistled for her fourth foul sending her to the bench just one bucket shy of the grand. When the junior went to the bench Monroe Central would take advantage of her absence to close the gap to a single bucket.

That back and forth had been the story of the game as the Huskies jumped out to a 13-0 lead to start the contest as the Seminoles struggled to find the net.

"We came out and we got up early," Harrison Central head coach Nick Yourkovich said." I think we thought we were going to roll through this."

"We were 0-11 before we made the first bucket," said Monroe Central head coach Troy Baker. "Some of that was due to Harrison Central's pressure, we got in a bit of a hurry."

Monroe Central turned up the pressure and forced some turnovers which they turned into points narrowing the score with their own 10-2 run.

"We were lax a little bit and they kept playing,' Yourkovich added. "If it were not for our spurt there in the fourth quarter I would tell you they deserved to win this game more than we did, because they never quit."

Harrison Central would lead 15-10 going into the second quarter but the Seminoles were determined to stick around closing to 29-24 with 1:23 left in the half. Both teams would add a free throw in a half where there were 29 fouls whistled by officials going into the locker room with Monroe trailing 30-25.

Harrison Central would come out with a renewed vigor and quickly opened up a 12- point lead.

"We worked hard and got back into it then gave them back-to-back possessions and offensive rebounds there to start the third quarter," Baker added. "They are strong inside, we got into a little bit of foul trouble and we did not get a lot of offensive rebounds."

Ellzy's third quarter total of 9 points, along with a trey from senior Kara Dunfee, helped the Huskies win the third quarter 16-13. Dunfee netted another three-pointer in the fourth and Shianne Nameth stepped up to score eight points in the final frame.

Ellzy and Nameth both notched a double-double, Ellzy added 10 rebounds while Nameth netted 19 points with 10 grabs. Dunfee rounded out double figures with a dozen points as the Huskies shot 20 of 66 from the field and netted 20 of 35 foul shots.

Allison Kuhn led the Seminoles (8-12) with 17 points. Laciey Ball added 12 points while Annie Digity chipped in 11 points. Monroe Central shot 14 of 47 from the floor and 17 of 33 from the charity stripe.

Monroe Central stole 13 passes but gave up 16 turnovers. The Huskies had 15 turnovers and ruled the glass 45 to 27.

Harrison Central will return to Dover Saturday afternoon to face off against No. 9 seed Tuscarawas Valley.

"We have been here before," said Yourkovich of the game. "Obviously we would like to take the next step for the program."
