Big Red’s Wilson leads locals in Columbus

COLUMBUS - Of the five local participants in the 2014 Ohio State Wrestling Championships at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, Steubenville's Tariq Wilson is the only one who began Thursday's first day of competition with a win.

Wilson, a 113-pound sophomore, defeated Aaron Kelty of Rocky River with a 14-5 major decision. Wilson placed sixth in the 106-pound division as a freshman in 2013.

Today, he faces Paul Petras of Parma Padua Franciscan in the second round.

The other Big Red state qualifier, Shawn Livingston, fell in both of his matches on Thursday.

To begin, Heath Lange of Lewistown Indian Lake earned an 8-1 decision over the 145-pound sophomore who placed third at the district match. Livingstown was defeated by a 5-1 decision at the hands of Wapakoneta's Dallas Ambos in the first consolation round.

In the team Division II standings, of which Steubenville is part of, Graham Local leads with 35 points, Claymont is second with 28.5 points and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary sits in third with 22 points.

In Division III, there are three local wrestlers competing today after fighting through the first round consolation bracket.

Harrison Central's Brandon White was pinned by Michael Sargeant of Troy Christian in 1 minute, 11 seconds in his first match of the day. He responded with a strong 3-1 decision over Pymatuning Valley's Mitch Skelers.

White, a 113-pound sophomore, is set to begin today's bout against Stan Bleich of Elyria Catholic.

Hunter Pizzino, a 132-pound junior for the Huskies, fell by a 5-0 decision to Trent Soto of Otsego and he advanced to today's round with a bye in the first consolation.

Steubenville Catholic Central's Leo Hermann was pinned by Joey Mack of Salem Northwestern in five minutes, 55 seconds in the first round. In the first consolation, he earned a 10-4 decision over Brookfield's Zach Jamieson.

The 170-pound senior will face either Jake Datz of Madison Plains or Ben Miller of Covington in today's first round.

Delta leads the Division III team standings with 31 points, followed by Dayton Christian with 22. Apple Creek Waynedale is third with 15 points.
