COWLES, Robert John, 86, of Toronto, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at the Trinity Medical Center, West, Steubenville, OH.
Robert dedicated his body for science to the Ohio University Medical School, Athens, OH.
He was born Oct. 21, 1927, in Steubenville, OH, the son of the late Robert John and Edna Mae Fornwalt Cowles.
Robert was a member and longtime Legion Chaplain of the Toronto American Legion Post 86, Toronto and was named Jefferson County Veteran of the year in 2010. Robert graduated from Steubenville High School in 1945 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy where he served his country during W.W.II. Robert was also a member of AMVETS Post 275 where he served as Chaplain
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Eleanor Louise Ladomersky Cowles Feb. 24, 2013, whom he married Feb. 4, 1956, and a younger brother, Ronald Cowles.
Robert is survived by his son, David (Lori) Cowles of York, PA, three grandchildren, Brooke (Michael Nye), Blake and Bryant; one great-grandson, Grayson Nye: and a brother, Richard Cowles.
Besides her parents, Eleanor Cowles was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and John (Hank); and one sister, Irene.
Eleanor is survived by one brother, Tom (Therese) of Brownstown, MI; two sisters, Magdalene (Madge) Rock and Joan Vaughn of Toronto, OH and many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Robert and his wife, Eleanor Cowles will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8th at the Clarke Funeral Home, 302 Main St., Toronto. Robert's family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 4 p.m.
Full military honors for Robert will be given by the Toronto American Legion at the funeral home Saturday.
