WEIRTON - The Weirton Fire Department is in line to receive a new piece of equipment courtesy of a grant through ArcelorMittal.
At their regular meeting Thursday, members of the Weirton Finance Committee voted unanimously to endorse a resolution authorizing the city manager to accept the grant. According to city officials, the grant will fund a $7,500 cutter and spreader tool, similar to the "Jaws of Life," and designed to cut through high strength steel used in newer vehicle models.
The equipment is utilized to remove people from car wreckage after accidents, officials explained. The new instrument is about 30 pounds and portable.
The Weirton Fire Department's existing cutter and spreader tool was purchased in 2002.
