SMUSZ, John J., 78, of Chester passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2014, in the emergency room at Trinity West hospital in Steubenville following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 10, 1935, in Weston, WV, the youngest and last surviving child to the late Anthony and Sophia Sagan Smusz.
An expert draftsman, John retired from the Quaker State Oil Refinery in Newell where he had worked for many years.
An avid West Virginia Mountaineer fan, John was rarely seen in public without his WVU hat.
He was baptized, raised and remained a faithful member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Chester.
Following his 1953 graduation from the former Chester High School John joined the U.S. Air Force, of which he was a proud veteran and served during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his sisters. Bernice and Mildred Smusz, Ann Blaner, Mary Macey and Julia Glass; brothers. Joseph and Stanley Smusz; and several nieces and nephews.
Rev. Father Eric Antwi will preside for a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday March 31 at 1 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester.
Interment will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group and the U.S. Air Force will give full military honors.
Friends are invited to join the family today (Sunday) from 1-5 p.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester where a recitation of the Rosary will take place at 4:30 p.m.
