WEIRTON - The Fourth of July is going to rock in Weirton this year with the inaugural Band Blast competition.
Band Blast will be a music competition featuring local bands, taking place from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. July 4 at the Weirton Event Center.
Organizers currently are looking for local bands interested in taking part. As part of the application process, bands must include a CD, DVD or a website featuring their music.
Applications must be submitted by May 5, and can be sent to Millicent Zack, City of Weirton, 200 Municipal Plaza, Weirton, WV 26062.
A committee will review appliciations and submitted materials, before selecting four bands to take part.
"The submitted bands will be narrowed down to four," Alicia Ford, part of the organizing committee, explained.
The four bands selected will then perform at Band Blast on July 4.
On the day of the event, each band will perform for 20 minutes.
A panel of three judges will be on hand, scoring performances on musical ability, stage presence and entertainment quality, and image.
"The audience will be the fourth judge," Ford said, explaining those in attendance will be able to purchase a vote for a $1 donation.
Monetary prizes will be awarded to participating bands, with first place receiving $1,000; second place $500; and third and fourth place each receiving $250. In addition, the winning band will receive a spot in the 2015 Weirton summer concert series schedule.

All proceeds from Band Blast will go to the Renaissance Weirton organization.
The competition will be followed by a performance from local band Legend and Weirton's Independence Day fireworks display.
