SWIGER, Edward M., Sr., 86, of Mentor (formerly of Tiltonsville), passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family Sunday morning, April 13, 2014.
Edward served in the U.S. Navy on active duty during World War II, before playing professional baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system. He went on to a successful business career, owning his own insurance agency and furniture company, before entering politics where he was elected to four consecutive terms as a county commissioner.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Swiger, and his mother, Josephine (Winski) Swiger.
He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Clara (D'Andrea); six children: Sandee Wade (Marvin), Bonnie Riehl, Edward M. Swiger Jr., Michael Swiger (Susan), Dr. Frank Swiger (Lauren), and David Swiger (Kathy); seven grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 at the Borkoski Funeral Home located at 337 Jefferson St., Tiltonsville, OH.
A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Joseph's Church located at 204 Mound St., Tiltonsville, Ohio, with Monsignor Thomas Petronek officiating. Internment will follow at the Upland Heights Cemetery.
A military service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday from the funeral home by the Belmont County VFW Honor Guard.
