Easter blessing

April 20, 2014
Weirton Daily Times
John Schultz, a St. Nicholas Orthodox Church sub-deacon, stands watch over the church's grave of Christ, which was part of services Holy Friday and Holy Saturday. The congregation will celebrate Pascha Vespers at 11 a.m. today, at which time they will celebrate Christ's rising from the dead with resurrection hymns. This year, both Orthodox and western Christian churches celebrate Easter today, but because the Orthodox tradition uses the Julian calendar and western tradition uses the Gregorian calendar, Easter is the same date for both traditions only every few years. St. Nicholas is part of the Orthodox Church in America, Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. -- Summer Wallace-Minger
