STEUBENVILLE - Mother Nature behaved herself long enough Monday for the Division II sectional to get under way at Vacarro Field.
The 10-team tournament originally was set to start Saturday with a pair of games. Those contests, however, were washed out by the day-long rain. Tournament officials were hoping to squeeze in two on Monday but the slate had to be re-adjusted again.
Columbiana County rivals East Liverpool and Beaver Local squared off in the lid-lifter with the Potters surviving via 6-1 victory. East Liverpool advances to meet top-seeded Big Red on Wednesday.
Weather permitting, action will resume today. Indian Creek and Cambridge will collide at 4 p.m. followed by a meeting between Buckeye Local and Meadowbrook, that first pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
Minerva will take on Carrollton in Wednesday's first game (4 p.m.) followed by the Big Red-East Liverpool tilt.
The Cambridge-Creek survivor will return to Vacarro on Thursday for a date with Edison (5 p.m.).
The upper bracket sectional final is on the schedule for Friday at 5 p.m. It will match the Buckeye-Meadowbrook survivor against the Big Red-Liverpool winner.
The lower bracket will be decided at 2 p.m. Saturday when the winner of the Minerva-Carrollton game tangles with Thursday's victor.
Steubenville's upper bracket champion will open district play on May 20 at Warsaw River View High School. The lower bracket plays on May 21. Both district games will start at 6 p.m.
