WEIRTON - Area residents will gather in Weirton Monday to pay tribute to those who serve in the nation's military, and those who have made the greatest sacrifice in protecting this country.
The Weirton community Memorial Day service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Honor Roll memorial along Three Springs Drive.
Ward 4 Councilman George Ash will serve as master of ceremonies for the event, with musical performances provided by the Weir High School band and the Weirton Woman's Club Drama Department.
Pat McGeehan, a former member of the West Virginia House of Delegates who served as an Air Force intelligence officer, will be the guest speaker.
As part of the service, wreaths will be presented by the following organizations: Gold Star Mothers; POW/MIA; American Legion Post 10; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2716; VFW Post 2716 Auxiliary; American Legion Post 10 SAL; American Legion Post 10 Auxiliary; World War II veterans; Weirton Last Man's Club; Korean War veterans; Vietnam War veterans; Persian Gulf veterans; Tri-State Marine Corps. Club; Tri-State Marine Corps. Club Auxiliary; Tri-State Young Marines; Weirton Woman's Club; Boy Scouts of America Troop 334; Knights of Columbus; Fourth Ward Homeowners Associaton; Polish National Alliance Lodge 3001; Elks Lodge 1801; Moose Lodge 688; AHEPA Lodge 103; Independent Order of Oddfellows Cove Valley Lodge 380; United Steelworkers; and others.
A salute to the dead will be provided by the American Legion and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus honor guards, with taps played by the Weir High band.
