WELLSBURG - A Wellsburg man was found dead and a female juvenile was taken into custody Thursday evening, according to a press release from the Brooke County sheriff.
The release doesn't state a crime was committed and gave no names. However, it did confirm a juvenile was in custody after police were called to a residence on Irongate Road concerning an incident Thursday evening.
"Upon arrival the investigating officer discovered a deceased male in the residence," stated the release. "A female juvenile was taken into custody pending further investigation."
The release stated no additional information other than the Wellsburg Police and the West Virginia State Police also responded to the scene.
Efforts to contact Brooke County Sheriff Chuck Jackson were unsuccessful Friday. The release stated more information would be forthcoming.
"This investigation is in the infant stages," stated the release. "More (information) will be released at a later time."
Joseph Barki, Brooke County prosecuting attorney, said law enforcement officials had to be careful how much information could be released because of state laws regarding juveniles.
"We're not going into a lot of detail at this time because it involves a juvenile," said Barki, adding under West Virginia law any alleged crime involving a juvenile isn't public record. "We can't go into a lot of detail now, but we hope to be able to say more about it next week."
