WEIRTON - The Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce is looking to bring the holiday season to the community a little early this year.
On Tuesday, the chamber announced plans for its inaugural Snow Bowl fundraiser event, proceeds from which will go toward animating a portion of the Christmas light display installed along Three Springs Drive each December.
The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. July 8 at Holiday Lanes Family Fun Center in Weirton. It is being held with assistance from Weirton's youth bowling league.
SNOW?BOWL?PLANS — On Tuesday, the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce announced plans for its inaugural Snow Bowl fundraiser event, scheduled for July 8 at Holiday Lanes in Weirton. "It's a community-based Christmas in July bowl-a-thon," Bob Babinchak, representing the youth bowling league, explained.
Chamber President Brenda Mull noted the efforts of the community in restoring the light display in recent years, including First Choice America credit union allowing for use of the land and nearby hotels assisting with the electricity costs, and the chamber wants to find ways to expand the display and make it a true community attraction.
"That display on Three Springs has generated a lot of attention," Mull said, adding the next step is to animate the toy soldier lights in the display.
The Snow Bowl is open to the community, with a $20 per person entry fee to cover two games of cosmic bowling and shoe rental. Participants will be asked to seek donations or pledges, and for those who raise at least $60 the entry fee will be waived. Participants also are encouraged to form five-member teams, and even challenge other teams to see who can bring in the most donations.
Mull explained the chamber's goal is to raise $5,000 for the light animation project, with any additional funds going to the youth bowling league to assist with tournament costs and scholarships.
Up to 80 bowlers will be able to participate.
Holiday Lanes will be adding to the festive atmosphere as part of the Snow Bowl.
"They're going to decorate the lanes that day," Babinchak said.
As an added fundraising incentive, participants who raise at least $500 will have an opportunity to be the grand marshal in this year's Weirton Christmas Parade.
"The highest over $500 will be our grand marshal," Mull said.
