Council to hold special meeting
WEIRTON - Weirton City Council will meet in special session 6:30 p.m. Friday in the council chambers of the Weirton Municipal Building.
Council will discuss legislation to amend Ordinance 1276 - the city's Business and Occupation Tax regulations. The legislation is being sponsored by Councilmembers David Dalrymple, George Ash and Chuck Wright.
Heroin distribution plea entered
WHEELING Marcel D. Weaver, 29, of East Liverpool pleaded guilty to a charge of distributing heroin in Hancock County, according to U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II.
Weaver entered a plea of guilty before Magistrate Judge James E. Seibert to the distribution of heroin within 1,000 feet of Allison Elementary School in Chester. Ihlenfeld said Weaver was part of a conspiracy to distribute heroin and other drugs in Hancock County and elsewhere between August and December.
Weaver, who is in custody pending sentencing, faces up to 40 years in prison, a $2 million dollar fine and six years of supervised release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen L. Vogrin and investigated by the Hancock-Brooke-Weirton Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force. The case began with a tip provided by the Youngstown office of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Holtz to speak at dinner
FOLLANSBEE - Former Notre Dame University football coach Lou Holtz, a Follansbee native, will be the guest speaker at this year's Follansbee Community Days Dinner.
It will be held June 26 at St. Francis Centre and also honor Don Layburn, entertainment chair for the festival for many years; festival supporter Dan Reasner and four local bands that have participated regularly.
