WEIRTON - The Weirton Sanitary Board approved an equipment purchase and a damage claim at its regular meeting Thursday.
Members unanimously voted to replace two aeration basin weir gates, which will cost $13,542. The gates control the flows through aeration basins. Four of the gates were installed in 1977 and are now completely inoperable, according to operators. The two that are not being replaced will be assessed to determine whether they can be rebuilt before any additional new gates are purchased. The new gates will be exercised regularly to keep them from locking up, Utilities Director A.D. "Butch" Mastrantoni noted.
Jamie Guida-Tate of Country Club Boulevard filed a damage claim with the board related to a blockage in a manhole under the street. Mastrantoni recommended that the board reimburse Guida-Tate for the full cost of repairs, and board members voted unanimously to pay a restitution of $1,450.
Jonathan Carpenter of Thrasher Engineering updated the board about collection system improvement projects that have been ongoing. He said that the Fifth Street lift station should be operational in mid to late August. Carpenter also presented the board with a change order for about $20,000 to be added to the contract to make up for "varying site conditions" that resulted from a construction crew's discovery of a culvert that was not mapped on Marland Heights Road. Getting around the site added costs to the project, and board members voted to approve the change order.
The board also voted to approve the payment of fees for the annual Public Service Commission Intrastate Revenue Assessment.
Kevin Board, secretary, reported that the staff and supplies are ready to repair the drainage issues at the Colliers Way Church of Christ. Rubble left over from the demolition of the Colliers Way Bridge is in the process of being delivered to the site, after which the rubble will be used to fill a hole that exposed a main pipeline behind the church. Staff is waiting for the remainder of material to be delivered, Board said.
