Grimshaw set to leave Trinity post

STEUBENVILLE — One day after Trinity Health System started moving patients into its new, state-of-the-art tower, President Matt Grimshaw announced he’s leaving.

Grimshaw will depart in mid-December for Kentucky, where he will take over as market president for CHI Saint Joseph Health.

He’s been at Trinity for seven years.

“Matt has made a significant impact on the Ohio Healthcare care landscape,” said Doug Lawson, South Region President for CommonSpirit Health. “He is passionate about delivering excellent health care services to those in need and has successfully navigated a wide range of strategic challenges during his tenure with Trinity. I am pleased that we will retain his passion and talent in the region.”

CHI Saint Joseph Health and Trinity Health System are both part of the South Region of CommonSpirit Health, which was created by the alignment of Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health in 2019. One of the largest healthcare systems in the U.S., CSI has more than 2,200 care sites in 24 states.

“My priority for the past seven years has been to position Trinity Health System for long-term success,” Grimshaw said. “With the opening of our new tower, strengthened clinical programs, medical education and the new St. Clairsville Neighborhood hospital, set to open next summer, I am confident that the Trinity Health System team is ready for the next chapter.”

He said he’s “humbled and honored to be selected” for the new post within CommonSpirit South Division at CHI Saint Joseph Health.

“I am excited to be joining the excellent team at Saint Joseph Health and to being a part of continuing their 150 year legacy of providing quality health care in the region,” he added.

Grimshaw also said he was grateful to the people of the Ohio Valley for the warm welcome he and his family received since relocating to the area.

“During our time here, we have made lifelong connections,” he said. “We will always look fondly on the memories that we have made with the people here.”

He said he’s also pleased to have been able to shepherd Trinity’s new patient tower to fruition: Grimshaw said Trinity received its long-awaited Certificate of Occupancy for the new tower Oct. 9, his 50th birthday, and a week later they began moving patients into the new addition, which features 88 private rooms, each with a large bathroom, as well as new public spaces, a surgical services hub and other amenities.

As for the spaces that were vacated, Grimshaw said they’re already working on “redevelopment options we have … you may see some more ambulatory repurposing. Doctor’s offices are a really good use of some of those spaces.”

An interim president will be announced in the coming weeks, hospital officials said.

“I’ll still be here a couple months,” Grimshaw said. “It will be a good chance to say my goodbyes and wish everybody the best.”
