ALFRED DETTORE

Alfred “Al” Dettorre, 96, of Steubenville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2024.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leona and Patsy Dettorre; his siblings George, Frank, Ginger, Ann, Eleanor, and Julius; and his wife Eva of 58 years, whom he married on August 20, 1949.

Al is survived by daughters Cassandra (Cassie) Dettorre of Suwanee, GA, and Cindy Kostelnik (Wayne) of Wintersville, OH; son Gregory Dettorre (Janet) of Powell, OH; grand- children April Pearce (Rob), Amber Beaupre (Sean), Mica Lange (Ryan), Shane Wamsley (Kia), Chris Kostelnik (Kim), and Gino Dettorre; great grand- children Chris Hubbard (Laken); Aaron, Andrew, and Ava Kostelnik; Evalyna and Kohlvin Lange; and Ty Wamsley.

Al was blessed to live a long life highlighted by dedication to faith and family. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony Catholic Church in downtown Steubenville for 58 years, serving many decades as an usher and member of the Men’s Club. On Wednesdays, he could be found in the church basement socializing with his club friends as they gathered to cook and share lunch.

His family also benefited from his culinary skills. The kitchen table was often covered with flour and cheese as he cut “homemades” and shredded Romano. During the holidays, he was in charge of flipping the pizzelle iron.

Al had a very strong work ethic. He began working at the A&P at the age of 17. He rose to produce manager and was with A&P for 31 years. He then worked as a painter at St. John’s Hospital for 15 years. His car often had a ladder on the roof and tarps in the trunk as he frequently took side jobs painting homes throughout Steubenville and Wintersville. He was popular at Sherwin Williams and throughout the community!

Al was a self-taught, skilled craftsman. He had an eye for detail and a knack for figuring things out. He built chairs, cedar chests, jewelry boxes, village scenes, and holiday decorations – including the large nativity scene that sat on the lawn of St. Anthony Church and the blue star that lighted the front of the Dettorre home in Pleasant Heights for many decades during the Christmas season.

Al’s family also knows that he was a gifted piano player even though he couldn’t read music. He had the remarkable ability to just sit down and play beautiful melodies. He enjoyed listening to classical and contemporary piano, and Danny Wright was a favorite.

Al was passionate about watching his favorite football teams. Friday nights, he’d cheer on Big Red. Saturdays were all about the Buckeyes, and the Steelers had his heart on Sunday afternoons.

Throughout the past several years, Al enjoyed life at Brookdale Muirfield in Dublin, OH. He was even featured on the Brookdale Facebook page last year as he shared his hobby of wood projects. His family is very grateful for the care and support provided by the Brookdale staff and the Suncrest Hospice team. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 1-4 pm at the Mosti Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4435 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be held Monday at 10 am at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
